More details here…

Tonus 4 is a vivid evolution of the classic stretch upholstery textile originally created by late Danish textile artist Nina Koppel. Known for its rich elasticity and color brilliance, Tonus 4 introduces 19 new shades to a palette of 47 hues, renewing a mid-century icon with contemporary vibrancy.

The origins of Tonus date back to the late 1960s, when the sculptural form of Jørgen Rasmussen’s office chair demanded a more adaptable fabric. This challenge led to the creation of Tonus — a textile that combines flexibility with bold, expressive color.

In this latest update, Tonus 4 preserves the textile’s signature stretch and timeless appeal while enhancing its visual impact. The colors — now brighter and more intense — include earthy, golden tones drawn from Nina Koppel’s original archive. These additions highlight her exceptional sensitivity to color, spanning warm spice tones and cool aquamarines reflective of Nordic light and landscape.

Renowned for complementing modern, organically shaped furniture, Tonus 4 continues to offer both functional performance and poetic expression.

Nina Koppel

Denmark

Nina Koppel was a Danish textile artist best known for designing Tonus, one of Kvadrat’s most iconic upholstery textiles. A graduate of the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen—where she later taught—Koppel was known for her experimental approach and collaborations across fashion, furniture, and design.

Introduced in the 1960s, Tonus remains a staple in Kvadrat’s collection. Koppel personally curated its bold, original color palette, with hues like pink and orange reflecting her vibrant personality and keen sense of color. Her work is celebrated for its blend of simplicity and elegance—qualities that continue to influence textile design today.
