Nina Koppel

Denmark

Nina Koppel was a Danish textile artist best known for designing Tonus, one of Kvadrat’s most iconic upholstery textiles. A graduate of the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen — where she later taught — Koppel was known for her experimental approach and collaborations across fashion, furniture, and design.

Introduced in the 1960s, Tonus remains a staple in Kvadrat’s collection. Koppel personally curated its bold, original color palette, with hues like pink and orange reflecting her vibrant personality and keen sense of color. Her work is celebrated for its blend of simplicity and elegance — qualities that continue to influence textile design today.
