Leap Before You Look – Black Mountain College 1933 – 1957

Leap before you look

A landmark publication, Leap Before You Look explores the radical experiment that was Black Mountain College — an incubator for some of the 20th century’s most influential artists, designers, and thinkers. Founded in 1933 in North Carolina by educator John Rice, the college placed artistic practice at the core of its educational philosophy, drawing faculty such as Josef and Anni Albers, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, and Buckminster Fuller, and producing alumni including Ruth Asawa, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly.

This richly illustrated catalogue, published in association with the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, accompanied a major exhibition and includes scholarly essays that examine the college’s interdisciplinary approach, its connection to Bauhaus ideals, and its transformative influence on American avant-garde culture. Highlights include archival photographs, artwork across mediums, student writings, and musical scores — offering a vivid portrait of a place where creativity flourished beyond conventional boundaries.

A beautifully designed and essential volume for anyone interested in the intersections of modern art, education, and experimentation.
