Kvadrat Sisu Fabric

by Nanna Ditzel , Danh Vo
for Kvadrat

Sisu is a bold checked upholstery textile designed by Nanna Ditzel, rediscovered and curated by artist Danh Vo during his research in the Kvadrat archives. The fabric was reintroduced for Vo’s 2018 exhibition Take My Breath Away at Denmark’s National Gallery (SMK).

With a tactile, magnified check pattern, Sisu evokes the iconic texture of Ditzel’s Hallingdal 65, reimagined in voluminous wool yarns. Its rhythmic color blocks and rich, sculptural surface offer a contemporary interpretation of a mid-century classic. Both statement and staple, Sisu bridges design heritage and artistic expression with subtle power.

Nanna Ditzel

Denmark

A pioneering figure in mid-century Danish design, Nanna Ditzel trained as a cabinetmaker before graduating from Copenhagen’s School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1946. Her multidisciplinary work spanned furniture, textiles, and jewelry, marked by bold color, organic forms, and a forward-thinking use of materials like fiberglass, wicker, and metal.

Among her many enduring designs, Hallingdal 65—created for Kvadrat in 1965—stands as a benchmark of lasting functionality and modern elegance. Still in continuous production today, the textile reflects Ditzel’s timeless aesthetic and her ability to unite innovation with everyday use.

Danh Vo

Vietnam

Danh Vo is a celebrated conceptual artist known for exploring identity, history, and cultural inheritance through personal and political narratives. Born in Vietnam in 1975 and raised in Denmark, Vo studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and Städelschule in Frankfurt. His work often weaves together found objects, archival materials, and subtle interventions to challenge dominant historical narratives.

Vo has presented solo exhibitions at leading institutions worldwide, including La Bourse de Commerce in Paris (2023), Secession in Vienna (2021), and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (2018). In 2015, he represented Denmark at the Venice Biennale, and he is a recipient of the Hugo Boss Prize, one of contemporary art’s most prestigious awards.

Danh Vo’s collaboration with Kvadrat exemplifies his nuanced engagement with material culture, particularly through his curatorial rediscovery of Nanna Ditzel’s textile design Sisu for his 2018 retrospective at Denmark’s National Gallery (SMK).
