More details here…

Steelcut 3 is a unicoloured evolution of the classic Steelcut upholstery textile, known for its durability, tactile richness, and vibrant hues developed by colorist Giulio Ridolfo.

Designed by Frans Dijkmeijer, Steelcut 3 features the same intricate weave used in Steelcut Beat, Trio, and Quartet. Its distinctive three-dimensional surface — resembling tiny pyramids or steel points — adds depth and texture while maintaining a clean, precise appearance. The weave itself was a creative accident, born from a discarded striped design that evolved into the now-iconic Steelcut structure.

The textile’s color dynamism emerges from its construction and the interplay of nuanced tones. Ridolfo’s palette draws inspiration from his travels in Mexico, memories of home, and the expressive collages of Henri Matisse. The result is a broad spectrum of intertones” — a mix of vivid florals, deep reds, violets, greens, and earthy hues. As Ridolfo notes, There are two main elements: the color of polenta — food colors — and also the garden colors. That’s why the collection looks very super natural in a way.”

With its strong visual identity and practical performance, Steelcut 3 is suitable for both contract and residential settings. It integrates seamlessly with the wider Steelcut family — Trio, Quartet, and Beat — offering endless possibilities for sophisticated tonal and textural combinations.

Frans Dikmeijer

Netherlands

Frans Dikmeijer studied at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven, before he began working at Kendix textiles. From there he became Head of Design at Artex before moving onto de Ploeg textiles. By 1992 his relationship with Kvadrat had begun and he went on to create a large number of upholstery textiles for them.

Dikmeiger is often referred to as one of Europe’s leading weavers. His work perceives materials, colors and textures as an organic whole. It is fundamental for him that there is harmony within the elements. A common characteristic of Frans Dikmeijer’s woven textiles is that they radiate a logical simplicity despite the technical complexity of them.

Giulio Ridolfo

Italy

Italian designer Giulio Ridolfo is renowned for his poetic and intuitive approach to color. A self-described observer and storyteller, he blends influences from nature, art, and fashion to develop nuanced, atmospheric palettes. At Kvadrat, he brings a southern warmth to Nordic design, shaping color through deep involvement in yarn structure and textile production.

A graduate of Milan’s Domus Academy, Ridolfo has collaborated with leading fashion and interior brands for decades. His signature “in-between” hues emerge from continuous iteration and layered inspiration—images, textures, and colors combined into something wholly original. Celebrated as a master of color, Ridolfo’s work continues to influence the textile industry worldwide.
